It's like they're in our house

This is exactly what Daphne loves to do, and informed consent is no issue--she bugs me with head-butts until I'll give in and play with her.

Around here, though, we call it "Sado-Masokitty", and Daphne the polydactyl cat gives it four thumbs up!

When it comes right down to it, all of the scientific method can be summed up in LeVar Burton's catchphrase: "But you don't have to take my word for it."

Now, Reading Rainbow is over.

The show's run is ending, [John] Grant [, content director,] explains, because no one — not the station, not PBS, not the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — will put up the several hundred thousand dollars needed to renew the show's broadcast rights.

Grant says the funding crunch is partially to blame, but the decision to end Reading Rainbow can also be traced to a shift in the philosophy of educational television programming. The change started with the Department of Education under the Bush administration, he explains, which wanted to see a much heavier focus on the basic tools of reading — like phonics and spelling.

Grant says that PBS, CPB and the Department of Education put significant funding toward programming that would teach kids how to read — but that's not what Reading Rainbow was trying to do.

"Reading Rainbow taught kids why to read," Grant says. "You know, the love of reading — [the show] encouraged kids to pick up a book and to read."

Goodbye, friend.

Well, another quarter down! Organic/biochemistry in summer quarter, was nuts, though. That image is the silver mirror formed when my Tollen's test detected an aldehyde in the sugar I was identifying (an aldohexose).

So, done:

NA-R registration

Inorganic chemistry

Organic & biochemistry

Developmental psychology

To do, fall and winter:

  • Statistics

  • CNA licensure

  • Cross-cultural communication

  • Anatomy and Physiology

  • Microbiology (hehe--last time I took micro, no genome, much less any microbial one, had been sequenced! i iz old...)

Nursing school application deadlines are coming right up, too--October and December are the first two.
